Sgt. Joseph Bernard Adkison (1892-1965), from Tipton County was one of six Tennesseans who were awarded the prestigious Congressional Medal of Honor during WWI. Adkison served with Co. C, 119th Infantry, 30th Division and was cited for bravery on Sept. 29, 1918 during the Battle of St. Quentin Canal at Bellicourt, France. Picture courtesy of the Tennessee State Museum. No longer able to remain neutral, the United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917, sending more than 4.7 million of its sons and daughters to serve during the “Great War.” Over 116,500 Americans lost their lives, with another 200,000 wounded.
